Why breast is best

The Department Of Health and the World Health Organisation both recommend exclusive breastfeeding during your baby’s first six months, and that breastfeeding continues supplemented with solid food after six months. But why?

Best for your baby

For starters, breast milk is packed with essential nutrients. It’s easy for your baby to digest, and it strengthens your baby’s immune system and provides protection against tummy bugs and ear infections.

Best for you too

Breastfeeding not only provides long-term heath benefits to your baby, it’s good for you too. Not only does it help you get rid of any extra baby weight, it also helps protect against conditions such as osteoporosis and breast, uterine and ovarian cancer.

Quick and convenient

When you breastfeed, there’s no need for bottles and a sterilizer – you can do it wherever you are and whenever your baby is hungry. Breast milk is ready for your baby any time she needs it, and it’s always the perfect temperature. That’s why it’s worth persevering, even if you’re having difficulties in the early days.

Nutrition for babies

Breast milk is the best nutrition for babies. Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for the first 6 months of your baby's life. Breastfeeding can also continue during and beyond the introduction of solid foods.

When you are breastfeeding, good nutrition is vital for you and your baby. Continue with the healthy diet you were following during pregnancy and try not to skip meals.

Combining breast and bottle feeding can affect your breast milk supply.

If you decide not to breastfeed, this decision may be difficult to reverse if you change your mind.

For further advice on feeding options, always contact your health visitor or midwife.
